There’s a massive schedule of entertaining television and film coming to Netflix in August. The August theme is focused on husbands looking for answers (and retribution) as the likes of Jason Momoa, John David Washington, and Lior Raz rejoin the streaming lineup with brand new action thrillers. You’ll also find the return of Game of Thrones showrunners Benioff and Weiss, an action classic from 2010, and the latest in Witcher animation as we eagerly await the return of Geralt.

  1. The Losers (2010)

Coming to Netflix: August 1 Language: English The skinny: Hard to believe this ensemble action flick is over 10 years old. The Losers is a good old-fashioned story of action and explosions, with some quality gags threaded through as a bunch of CIA misfits try to overcome betrayal. Headed by solid work from a younger Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, and Denny the Heart Patient (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), with a nice bit of assholery from Jason Patric helping The Losers qualify as an enjoyable way to kill a couple of hours. 2. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (2021)

Coming to Netflix: August 2 Language: English The skinny: As a bona fide Witcher stan, I’m almost as excited for this full-length animated feature as I am for the return of the dashing Henry Cavill in December. We know Geralt of Rivia well, however, Nightmare of the Wolf will tell the story of Vesemir, the grizzled Witcher from the Wolf School that taught the Butcher of Blavikan everything he knows. I’m so excited for this extension of Witcher lore I could drink a potion and take on some Nekkers. 3. Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami (2021)

Coming to Netflix: August 4 Language: English/Spanish Documentarian Billy Corben is back with another installment of the Cocaine Cowboys saga in this six-part docuseries. According to the Netflix site, the first episode of the latest set kicks off with: “Two childhood friends (who) go from high school dropouts to the most powerful drug kingpins in Miami in this true story of a crime saga that spanned decades.” I love a good narco flick, but the real-life stuff and the stories of those that lived it is even wilder than the made-up stuff. 4. The Old Ways (2020)

Coming to Netflix: August 5 Language: English/Spanish The skinny: If you like a horror thriller with face paint, snakes, and superstitious practitioners of old magic, then The Old Ways looks the goods. Mexican American reporter Christina rolls into the town of Veracruz to cover a story of sorcery and witchcraft, only to be kidnapped by locals who think she’s the devil. Good times! 5. Hit & Run (Season 1, 2021)

Coming to Netflix: August 6 Language: English If you’ve seen Lior Raz in the excellent Netflix series Fauda, you’ll know the Israeli actor is a bona fide action star and badass (watch Fauda, I HIGHLY recommend it). In this new project from the producers responsible for Fauda and The Killing, Raz heads to the states to find out who was responsible for the hit and run killing of his wife. Cue the conspiracies, heart-racing action, and hard questions. The trailer got me amped to run through a brick wall!

  1. Shaman King

Coming to Netflix: August 9 Language: Japanese (English Subtitles) The skinny: Shaman King is the latest popular manga title to make its way into a full anime series. Creator Hiroyuki Takei chose shamanism, the religious practice involving interacting with a spirit world through an altered state of consciousness, to be the major discipline in the manga series as it hadn’t been attempted before. The synopsis is described by Netflix as follows: “Medium Yoh Asakura enters a battle tournament held every 500 years, competing with other shamans in a bid to become the all-powerful Shaman King.” I do enjoy a series of madcap anime battles! 7. Beckett (2021)

Coming to Netflix: August 13 Language: English The skinny: John David Washington seems to always get himself into some shit, whether it’s infiltrating the KKK (BlackKklansman), playing wide receiver (Ballers), or doing a mind-bending Chris Nolan movie (Tenet). Beckett is no exception, as Washington gets caught up in an international political conspiracy after a car accident while holidaying in Greece with Alicia Vikander.  8. Gone for Good (2021)

Coming to Netflix: August 13 Language: French (English Subtitles) The skinny: Another international series based on the quality novels of Harlan Coben (following The Stranger, The Woods, and The Innocent). Gone for Good keeps up with our August theme of blokes looking for answers, as Guillaume searches for his missing lover just a decade after the death of his wife and best friend. That’s about all there is to know for newcomers, however, if you’re a fan of Coben’s books you know there will be more twists and turns than Diagon Alley. 9. Sweet Girl (2020)

Coming to Netflix: August 20 Language: English The skinny: This one is simple: ask your significant other, friend with benefit, or casual hook up if they want to watch a Jason Momoa movie. You already know what the answer is. Strap yourself in for some good, wholehearted, head-busting revenge. I don’t even care that it’s about a heartbroken dad looking for answers about the death of his wife… I’m in! 10. The Chair (Season 1, 2021)

Coming to Netflix: August 20 Language: English The skinny: Benioff and Weiss have been pretty quiet since the end of Game of Thrones (maybe something to do with the shithouse ending). The Chair is their new series, starring the legendary Sandra Oh as the new Chair of a failing English department at a prestigious university. I’m sure there are a few Lannisters in this one, just not the ones that shag their sister (I hope).
