Netflix is getting into the summer spirit with some awesome movie and TV streaming additions for June. A Kevin Hart tearjerker and Liam Neeson taking on the weather headline the Hollywood flicks, along with a couple of cracking action films and Cohen brothers classic. There’s also the return of a popular international Netflix original, a deep dive into pop music, an animated new take on Godzilla, and another atmospheric Scandinavian drama. Check out the trailers and start marking your calendars!
- The Big Lebowski (1998)
Coming to Netflix: June 1 Language: English The skinny: The Coen Brothers have made some of the craziest movies in history, and the story of the Dude (Jeff Bridges) could just be the craziest. The Big Lebowski was right in the thick of our top 40 movies of the 1990s. An all-star cast makes this tale of mistaken identity a great ensemble flick, with Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Steve Buscemi (Fargo), John Goodman (King Ralph), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Capote), and John Turturro all on hand to play unforgettable characters (seeing Flea and Peter Stormare ham it up as Nihilists is pure genius). I have a Walter Sobchak action figure, and a rug that really ties the room together. Watch it, then watch it again with a White Russian. The Big Lebowski is amazing. 2. Cradle 2 the Grave (2003)
Coming to Netflix: June 1 Language: English The skinny: With DMX’s untimely death earlier this year, streaming services are making sure the late rapper/actor’s material is available to fans and casuals alike. For a brief period, DMX was a singular action star, teaming up with icons like Jet Li and Steven Seagal in some of the early 2000s most entertaining Hong Kong-style flicks. Cradle 2 the Grave was the best of these roles, with DMX and Li taking on kidnappers, criminal gangs, and bad jewelers. Check out this synopsis, courtesy of IMDB: “When his daughter is kidnapped and held in exchange for priceless diamonds, the leader of a crew of highly skilled urban thieves (DMX) forges an unlikely alliance with a Taiwanese Intelligence officer (Jet Li) to rescue her. Their race against the clock to find the precious stones ultimately unravels a plot to distribute a deadly new weapon of war.” If that’s not enough info to help you kill a couple of hours watching this B-grade masterpiece, then give the soundtrack a whirl as it’s also awesome. Curated by X, it features his banger X Gon’ Give It To Ya and features from the likes of Eminem, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, and more. 3. Sweet Tooth (Season 1, 2021)
Coming to Netflix: June 4 Language: English The skinny: This Netflix adaptation of the DC comic from Jim Mickle and Beth Schwartz is an adventure fantasy series about a half-boy/half-deer – known as a hybrid – who’s under threat from regular humans in a post-apocalyptic world. The Netflix synopsis reads: “On a perilous adventure across a post-apocalyptic world, a lovable boy (Christian Convery) who’s half-human and half-deer searches for a new beginning with a gruff protector (Nonso Anozie).” Sweet Tooth was helped to the screen from its beloved source material by executive producers Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey. 4. Xtreme/Xtremo (2021)
Coming to Netflix: June 4 Language: Spanish The skinny: If you could watch a cross between John Wick and The Raid: Redemption, two of the all-time great action flicks, then it might look like Xtremo. I’m a sucker for revenge tales, especially when brothers, unkempt beards, and samurai swords are involved. This one’s a doozy, as Maximo hunts his brother Lucero two years after he murdered his father and son. Maximo, with only his sister and a troubled youth for help, has to get through each of Lucero’s underlings before they get the blades going. I’m all in. 5. Lupin (Part 2, 2012)
Coming to Netflix: June 11 Language: French/English Dub The skinny: The most popular international Netflix Original returns for the second series on June 11, which gives you plenty of time to smash through Season 1, either for the first time or as a refresher. “As a teenager, Assane Diop’s life was turned upside down when his father died after being accused of a crime he didn’t commit. 25 years later, Assane will use ‘Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Burglar’ as his inspiration to avenge his father.” As, for Part 2, things haven’t gone to plan for Assane and he’ll have to put his hand in the fire and risk everything in his quest for revenge.

- Katla (Season 1, 2021)
Coming to Netflix: June 17 Language: Icelandic/English Subtitles The skinny: It’s hard to go past Scandinavian noir for melding mystery, the elements, and weirdness into a haunting, harrowing tale. Katla looks like it’s got the goods. “One year after the violent eruption of the subglacial volcano Katla, the peace and tranquility in the small town of Vik is dramatically disturbed,” says the IMDB synopsis. There’s not a huge amount to go on, but the beautiful island terrain of Iceland looms as a major player. 7. Fatherhood (2021)
Coming to Netflix: June 18 Language: English The skinny: Comedy superstar Kevin Hart takes a rare step into drama (where he excels) with this movie about being a single father. I’ve seen the trailer on various social media platforms four or five times, and it really plays havoc with my dust allergies. There will be obvious comedic touches, but the earnestness of Hart and the sheer cuteness of his film daughter Melody Hurd (Them) strike true. Plus, the help of a supporting cast featuring Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), Frankie Faison (The Wire), and Alfre Woodard (The Practice) will make Fatherhood one of June’s unmissable films. Defs one for date night! 8. This Is Pop (Season 1, 2021)
Coming to Netflix: June 22 Language: English The skinny: “Wait, is he right? Did I fuck up pop music?” – T Pain One for the music lovers, This is Pop is an eight-part documentary series featuring some of the highest-selling, most famous names in pop music over the course of the last 70 years. Each film will be released together for you to binge-watch your way through, and focuses on different aspects of the genre, including:
Autotune Britpop Stockholm Syndrome (ABBA) The Boys II Men Effect When Country Goes Pop The Brill Building in 4 Songs What Can a Song Do Festival Rising
There’s an interesting collection of stories and anecdotes to explore throughout the series, and interviews with stars ranging from Chuck D to Shania Twain, Babyface, and Hozier. 9. Godzilla Singular Point (Season 1, 2021)
Coming to Netflix: June 24 Language: Japanese/English Subtitles The skinny: If you thought Godzilla couldn’t change tack, then you thought wrong! The iconic Japanese sea monster has been brought to new life via a new animated series over 13 parts. It’s produced by Bones and Orange and directed by Atsushi Takahashi (Blue Exorcist, Eiga Doraemon). “Brought together by a mysterious song, a grad student and an engineer lead the fight against an unimaginable force that may spell doom for the world.” The animation looks on point and the story could be anything, but I’ve always got time for badass sea monsters! 10. The Ice Road (2021)
Coming to Netflix: 25 June Language: English The skinny: Liam Neeson versus mother nature and mining company skullduggery? Yep, I’ll watch that. Putting a big budget and good actors (Laurence Fishburne, Holt McCallany, Amber Midthunder) into a drama about saving trapped miners makes this Ice Road Truckers remix a must-watch. The Ice Road driving scenes look outstanding and the dramatic side of things looks like it will hold up well.
