Netflix is right in the middle of its summer schedule, loading up on quality coming-of-age stories, big-time horror films, and returning some binge-worthy hits. There’s a massive schedule of entertaining flicks and television for you to get stuck into while streaming Netflix during July!

  1. Dynasty Warriors (2021)

Coming to Netflix: July 1 Language: Mandarin (English Subtitles) The skinny: Chinese historical dramas are great, with this one a classic sword and sandal epic mixed with elements of drama, spycraft, and feng shui! The official synopsis breaks it down: The Yellow Turban Rebellion breaks out in the late Eastern Han Dynasty. With the help of his trusted right-hand men Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, militia leader Liu Pei successfully suppresses the revolt. The calculating warlord Dong Zhuo takes advantage of the situation and takes control of the court, stirring further unrest. This movie is a little different given that it has been adapted from a video game of the same name, but it promises to go pretty hard. 2. Underworld: Awakening (2012)

Coming to Netflix: July 1 Language: English The skinny: A leather-clad Kate Beckinsale goes ballistic in this installment of the Underworld franchise, as humans try to wipe out both the Vampires and Lycans. After being held captive, the vampire Selene escapes in order to save her species while trading barbs with head vamp Tywin Lannister… I mean Charles Dance. A great melding of horror concepts, pulp fiction lore, and stylized action, it’s hard to come away disappointed by Awakening. And there’s plenty of “oh, that guy” actors (Stephen Rea, Michael Ealy, Theo James) to exclaim over throughout. 3. Mortel (Season 2, 2021)

Coming to Netflix: July 2 Language: French The skinny: French supernatural drama Mortel first debuted back in November 2019 and was a sleeper hit domestically, so has come back for an intriguing second season. The second season sees the return of Sofiane, Victor, and Luisa, friends bound together by a supernatural force. Check out the first season in preparation! 4. R.L Stine’s Fear Street Trilogy (2020)

Coming to Netflix: July 2, July 9, and July 19. Language: English The skinny: R.L. Stine’s collection of Fear Street books have been adapted for Netflix with three interconnected movies directed by Leigh Janiak, having previously been put on hold due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The films take place in different time periods, with the first being set in 1994, the second in 1978, and the final entry taking place during 1666. In the 1994 installment, which kicks things off on July 2, a group of teenagers find out that a series of terrifying events in their town of Shadyside may be connected to each other, and that they may be the next targets. The cast includes Gillian Jacob, Kiana Madeira, Emily Rudd, Olivia Welch, Sadie Sink, Julia Rehwald, and McCabe Slye. 5. Cat People (Season 1, 2021)/Dogs (Season 2, 2021)

Coming to Netflix: July 7 Language: English The skinny: Look, I own two dogs and a cat (and two horses, but that’s an entirely different problem), have small children, and enjoy the absolute weirdness that is obsessive pet ownership captured on film. So when you show me a clip of a dude rapping about how awesome his cat is while there’s one of those hairless fellas sitting on his head, I’m all in. Cats, dogs, or both, there’s plenty here for you to binge-watch with your feline or canine friends!

  1. Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (Season 1, 2021)

Coming to Netflix: July 8 Language: English The skinny: The next installment in this hit animated CGI series, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness again features beloved characters Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield and is set to cover territory between the settings of Resident Evil 4 and 5. Nick Apostolides and Stephanie Panisello voiced Leon and Claire in the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake and will reprise their roles. During the April 2021 Resident Evil Showcase stream, the game’s developer Capcom revealed that Infinite Darkness will be set directly in the White House and the president will be none other than Ashley Graham’s father! 7. Atypical (Season 4, 2021)

Coming to Netflix: July 9 Language: English The skinny: The fourth and final season of Atypical is out on July 9, and as the father of a young autistic son, I can’t recommend it enough. Make sure you block out a big space the weekend before to watch the first three seasons. It’s a genuinely hilarious coming-of-age story with real drama about a kid on the spectrum finishing high school, his family, and their life outside of the ordinary. The weirdest thing about it is that Michael Rappaport seems like the stable part of the family, when off the show he’s a trainwreck (and an asshole). 8. The Water Man (2020)

Coming to Netflix: July 9 Language: English The skinny: Hoping to save his sick mother (Rosario), Gunner (Lonnie Chase) ventures into the remote forest to search for a mythical figure known as the Water Man, who possesses the secret to immortality. In his directorial debut, star David Oyelowo (Selma, The Butler) brings together a coming-of-age story dealing with themes of friendship and family with a mythical quest to craft a genuine modern fairytale. I was sold purely because Gunner is strapped with a samurai sword, but the movie looks like great summer viewing. 9. Masters of the Universe: Revelation (Season 1, 2021)

Coming to Netflix: July 23 Language: English The skinny: The Netflix and Mattel collaboration is a reboot of the 80s classic cartoon, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and will be helmed by director Kevin Smith. The characters in Masters of the Universe: Revelation look similar to the 1983 original, just with bulkier muscles and a more lurid animated color set. According to the official synopsis, the show will pick up from the end of the iconic 1983 original. Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, will turn heel to voice Skeletor, with Chris Wood voicing He-Man. Sarah Michaelle Geller, Alicia Silverstone, ex-Game of Thrones stars Liam Cunningham (Davos) and Lena Headey (Cersei), and punk rocker Henry Rollins are also signed up to the project. 10. Blood Red Sky (2021)

Coming to Netflix: July 23 Language: English/German The skinny: From my rough calculations, airplane claustrophobia + hijackers + mysterious illness = vampire lady goes off on the Australian bloke from Prison Break’s crew of assholes. This looks like a perfect summer movie full of genre-bending insanity that should make you long for motherfucking snakes on a plane. I’m in!
