For just over one million cold ones, a unique 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster could be in your garage in a matter of days. This classic ride was restored from bumper to bumper back in 2017. To sweeten the deal, they’re throwing in matching luggage for the open road. The 300 SL Roadster is listed by RM Sotheby’s for private sale in Monaco, a hotspot locale for all the big kid toys like yachts, helicopters, and apparently old-school sports cars. There, it awaits a new buyer, alluring to all with its mid-century lines and fully-restored engine. There are good cars and then there are great ones. Beyond those, there is the Mercedez-Benz 300 SL Coupe which stands alone on the podium. The marque couldn’t help itself and tweaked the design here and there as the years went on, though.  RM Sotheby’s RM Sotheby’s RM Sotheby’s RM Sotheby’s The 300 SL Coupe first hit the markets in 1954. It was considered one of the flashiest and most elegant cars out on the road in its day. Even so, the public version of the race car (W194) fell quickly. As the hype died down, Mercedes racked its head for a new direction. What came later was a convertible version that was inspired by the original but made things a little more, shall we say, breezy. The idea took some re-engineering when it first landed. It’s not as simple as sawing off the roof. The design had to be adjusted at its core to accommodate the shift in style in terms of weight and distribution. The company took advantage of finding itself back at the drawing board to reconfigure other comfort points, too. A new form to the doors made entering and exiting the vehicle less of a strain. The spare tire was slipped into the trunk floor for more space. The fuel tank was smaller on this model as well.  RM Sotheby’s RM Sotheby’s RM Sotheby’s RM Sotheby’s This particular car showcases this rich history. And, in true Monaco style, the silver with a brilliantly red leather interior color scheme will be sure to admiring glances from all. The M198 inline-six engine still rides strong, just as the original engineers intended. The four-speed manual can max 240 HP, though few have probably let the engine roar in quite some time. What’s the odometer read? About 64,000 miles!  During the 10-year renovation, matching luggage was commissioned. That’s part of the deal, too. What makes the car so rare is that it was part of a limited 618 run (in 1957). There are only 1,858 in all since production ended in 1963. If you have $1.1 million lying around for a vintage ride, we can’t blame you for keeping your eye on this listing.   rmsothebys.com
