Not all heroes wear capes, but if they wanted to wear a watch, the new C60 Lympstone is the only option for those emulating the very best of us. Manufactured by Christopher Ward, this new military-grade watch sits at the heart of the Royal Marines, bringing together elite horology with unbeatable functionality. Regardless of rank, age and where you end up in life, Lympstone is memorable for all Royal Marines. Home to the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM) training base, Lympstone in Devon trains all marines, recruits and reserves, transforming each of them from boys to men of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, the Queen.
Working with Christopher Ward after the success of the 2019 Military Collection, the Royal Marines wanted an elite ‘tool’ watch to honour CTCRM Lympstone. Describing the concentration of energy that comes from the base as “full-on” Lieutenant Colonel Michael Scanlon, Commanding Officer of Commando Training Wing defines the ‘commando mindset’ as being underpinned by the commando spirit: determination, courage, humour in adversity and selflessness. Added to that, are ‘commando values’ of excellence, discipline, integrity and humility, All of which sit at the centre of what it is to be a Royal Marines Commando. With this in mind, Christopher Ward went all out to produce a watch fit for the UK’s greatest heroes. For all those willing to sacrifice their lives for the freedom and liberties universal to humanity, the C60 is a tribute to the “excellence, displine, integrity and humilty” displayed by Royal Marine Commandos.
Much like its best-selling brethren in the 2019 Military Collection, the rugged look of this handsome beast differs in just one critical way. While its predecessor “the C65s are retro-looking vintage-inspired watches” according to CEO and co-founder Mike France, the more contemporary design of the C60 Lympstone watch is based on the new ‘Trident 3’ C60 case. Wanting to make “a modern tool watch fit for a modern force” Adrian Buchmann, head of product design at Christoper Ward took inspiration from the tools the Royal Marines employ. Using the same materials used to make weapons, Ward crafted the dial from forged carbon, alongside the Trident Steel case, complete with gunmetal and black stealth feel. Using incredibly tough Cordura advanced fabric, just like the gear supplied to the military, this strap won’t quit. Also featured in the watch is a solar compass on the rotating inner bezel. Using the sun and the hour hand to help orientate yourself, Adrian positions the wristwatch as one that is built for adventure in challenging environments. Plus, in addition to being waterproof to 600m, there are also larger protective guards around the two screw-down crowns at 2 and 4 o’clock.
Being a military watch, accuracy is of fatal importance. Each C60 watch contains a COSC-certified chronometer, with a tolerance of just -4/+6 seconds per day. With military units synchronizing watches as far back as the history of the chronograph, Mike said the C60 “needed to be pinpoint accurate”. In store since mid-September, this marine-inspired watch brings out the spirit of Lympstone, a spirit that can be carried on your wrist to remind you of the place that is central to the commando mantra.
