Despite being as hard to find as hen’s teeth, PlayStation 5’s have been flying off the shelves worldwide. In fact, over 10 million have been sold since the console’s debut last November, making it Sony’s fastest ever selling console. In comparison, it took Sony nine months to sell 10 million units of the PS4, which has gone on to sell more than 100 million units worldwide since November 2013. This is incredible considering the delays with manufacturing due to the COVID-19 pandemic that’s meant thousands of gamers have been left waiting for Sony to re-stock units the globe over. “We’ve built more PlayStations faster than we ever have before which makes me happy. But on the other hand, we’re some time from being able to meet all the demand that’s out there, which makes me feel bad,” Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan told Reuters via email. The high demand for PS5 consoles can also be attributed to exclusive games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Returnal, and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales has been especially profitable, selling more than 6.5 million copies since its release, while Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has sold more than 1.1 million copies since it dropped last month and Returnal a tidy 560,000 copies since April of this year. “I can’t express enough the deep gratitude we feel for our passionate community of PlayStation fans who have embraced PS5, and the world-class development and publishing partners who bring such incredible gaming experiences to our platforms,” said Ryan in the release. “While PS5 has reached more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply.”
