I get the feeling Roland Emmerich doesn’t like Earth. After having aliens invade in Independence Day, global warming usher in a new ice age in The Day After Tomorrow, and a polar shift cause the seas to rise and engulf the world in 2012, it’s obvious he has something against civilization. That’s become even more clear with his latest apocalyptic blockbuster Moonfall. This time it’s the moon that’s set to cause the end of days. A mysterious force knocks the moon off its usual trajectory and has it heading straight for Earth. With the Earth mere weeks away from total annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) believes she knows how to save us all. With the help of Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson), an astronaut from her past, and conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (John Bradley), the trio must head into space to stop the end of the world as we know it.

This is Emmerich at his destructive best. With an estimated budget of $150 million, you know there’s going to be some fantastic special effects of famous world monuments being demolished, with the trailer showing glimpses of the Earth’s demise. We also get a narration from the great Donald Sutherland who says, “They found something they kept hidden for 50 years,” before the trailer reveals some spoils about the plot. Along with directing, Emmerich wrote the script with regular collaborators Spenser Cohen and Harald Kloser. The cast also includes Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu, Eme Ikwuakor, Carolina Bartczak, and Maxim Roy. Moonfall will crash into cinemas on February 4.
