I don’t know what is about Westerns featuring cagey old farmers (or widows) with hidden pasts, but they always strike me as must-watch films. The latest in the Western mystery genre is Old Henry, which sees the underrated Tim Blake Nelson play farmer, Henry McCarty, a man with a dark past who’s trying to go good. McCarty and his son find an injured man (Scott Haze) with a bag full of cash. Three guys with dubious credentials (led by Stephen Dorff) are hot on his trail.
As the synopsis from Shout Films details: When a posse of men claiming to be the law come for the money, the farmer must decide whom to trust. Defending against a siege of his homestead, he reveals a talent for gunslinging that surprises everyone, calling his true identity into question. Color me intrigued. As a fan of both Blake Nelson and Dorff, Old Henry looks the goods for some good old fashioned shootin’ and skullduggery. Old Henry will be released in theaters on October 1 in the US.
