As a teenager, Axe body spray was almost required wearing. When kids hit puberty it was the deodorant of choice. While I’ve now moved on from the cheap body spray, whenever I get a whiff of Axe Africa it takes me back… but enough about me. Axe is back in the headlines after being revived by Brooklyn-based design collective MSCHF.
Known for combining brands to create unique fashion pieces, MSCHF has turned its attention to the world of perfume. No. 5 Axe blends the classic scent of Axe body spray with the high-end fragrance Chanel No. 5. The radioactive green perfume comes in the classic Chanel No. 5 bottle, but if you’re interested in copping this fragrance, I’m afraid you’ve missed out. No. 5 Axe sold out in just minutes, which is quite incredible considering it’s $400 a bottle!

The creation of this locker room aftershave isn’t just a novelty, but also a commentary on marketing and how what we perceive as luxurious is often influenced by advertising and celebrities. A statement from MSCHF explaining the scent said: “Certain smells are ubiquitous in American culture, and Axe Body Spray is one of them. “Iconic” is in no way synonymous with “good,” and in the fragrance world Axe deserves the label as much as Chanel. At the end of the day, where icons are concerned, there is no good or bad; There is merely visible and invisible.”
“Picture Chanel No.5 in your mind’s eye and you may see a certain golden color, perhaps conjured alongside generic images of Marion Cotillard or Brad Pitt. But think of Axe and you feel that acrid burn in the deepest recesses of your sinuses; you remember vividly the sun slanting through a high window to cast striped shadows through the half-open metal door of a school locker. You can taste it floating on the air–that brutal tactless scent–struggling valiantly to mask its wearer’s particular pubescent musk and failing, ever failing, creating a nasal cocktail of unrivaled pungency.” While you may have missed out on Axe No. 5, you can keep in the loop with MSCHF drops by downloading the app.
