Jon Bernthal fans unite as the phenomenal actor returns to television as the lead in the upcoming Showtime series American Gigolo. Based on the Jerry Bruckheimer (Armageddon) produced film of the same name from 1980 (which was written and directed by Paul Schrader, the writer of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull), the 10 episode series is set to be overseen by David Hollander (Ray Donovan), who will also write and direct. American Gigolo has been “in development” since 2014 when Bruckheimer first announced the story’s transition from film to television (a Hollywood trend that has been on the rise in the past decade). The original film featured Richard Gere (Days of Heaven) as a high-priced male escort in Los Angeles who gets romantically involved with a politician’s wife, all the while being a murder suspect. So, it seems like there’s a lot going on. Check out the original trailer for the film below:
According to SlashFilm, the series will star Bernthal as “Julian Kaye, who is introduced 15 years after he’s been arrested for murder and struggling to find his footing in the modern-day Los Angeles sex industry while seeking the truth about the set-up that sent him to prison all those years ago and also hoping to reconnect with Michelle, his one true love, played by Gretchen Mol.” Sadly, it doesn’t seem like becoming a gigolo is part of the plot, but there’s still hope! Showtime Networks President of Entertainment Gary Levine has said that “If you haven’t already fallen under the spell of Jon Bernthal, get ready, Jon absolutely owns the screen with his searing, brooding, and vulnerable performance in this contemporary version of American Gigolo. Writer/director David Hollander brilliantly reimagines the seductive original film, confronting the mystery, the exhilaration, and the danger of our deepest desires.” Fans of Bernthal will note that the actor’s career has included some exceptional credits in the past decade including his roles on The Walking Dead and Daredevil, which lead to his own spin-off series The Punisher. His film work is also impressive, with supporting roles in films like Fury, The Wolf of Wall Street, Baby Driver, and Ford v. Ferrari, and that’s not to mention his frequent collaborations with neo-western filmmaker Taylor Sheridan, from Sicario to Wind River, culminating in a leading role in this year’s Those Who Wish Me Dead. American Gigolo is filming now and has received a series order by Showtime.
