Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre has unveiled the world’s first watch with four faces. The Reverso Hybris Mechanica Calibre 185 is one of the most complex watches created. It took six years and 12 patents before the watch could finally be given the all-clear. Limited to just 10 pieces, the Reverso contains an incredible 11 complications and is enclosed in a surprisingly compact 15.15 mm thick white gold case. Powered by a manually-wound Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 185 movement with a 50-house reserve, it’s the intricate nature of each face that makes this watch a collector’s item.
The first dial displays the time with a floating tourbillon at the 7 o’clock position. You can find the date at 5 o’clock while the week and month are displayed at 12 o’clock. It also features a perpetual calendar that even takes into account leap years. The second face offers a jumping-hours and peripheral-minutes format while the third displays the three moon phases – the synodic cycle, the draconic cycle, and the anomalistic cycle. This elaborate dial reveals the phases of the moon in the Northern Hemisphere at the top, representing the synodic cycle. Below is a 3D Sun orbited by a hemispherical Moon referencing the draconic cycle, and next to that is an image of the earth, representing the anomalistic cycle. These three phases can also accurately predict astrological events. Jaeger-LeCoultre claims the moon phase display only needs adjustment once every 1,111 years, so you don’t have to worry about tinkering with it to make sure it’s working. The final face is on the back of the watch and features the Southern Hemisphere moon phase. While not as useful as the other dials, it’s visually spectacular and adds another element of wonder. If all this doesn’t make much sense, check out the video below for a deep dive into the creation of the watch and all its functions.
The Reverso Hybris Mechanica Calibre 185 is finished with a midnight blue alligator strap, giving it an air of sophistication. For more information visit the official Jaeger-LeCoultre website.
