Jacob & Co have done it again. The luxury watchmaker’s latest release is a gemstone covered technicolor timepiece like no other. Coming hot on the heels of the ridiculous $800K Astronomia Skull wristwatch, this new creation is a one-off that’s sure to brighten any outfit. Mystery timepieces, where the indicators seemingly float over the dial, have been part of watchmaking for centuries. First designed by a clockmaker who also practiced magic, Jacob & Co’s take on the process is mesmerizing.
The Mystery Arlequino Tourbillon houses two triple-axis tourbillons positioned side-by-side in the center of the dial. Instead of the standard 6 or 12 o’clock position, the tourbillons of this colorful time-teller “turn simultaneously at 60 seconds for the first axis, and two minutes for the second and third axis.” Not only is this a horological first, but a spectacular innovation. It might look hard to read with no numbers, but the two discs of colored gems indicated the minute and hour placements. According to Jacob & Co, each diamond on the gem-covered disc is meant to represent “time – secretly, mysteriously.”
The 50 mm white gold case is certainly chunky, but it needs to be to hold the number of gems this watch contains. There are 84ct worth of gemstones crafted into the Arlequino. There are 192 multicolored sapphires (14.47ct) set into the case, 120 multicolored sapphires (7.14ct) embedded in the inner ring, 119 multicolored sapphires set in the minute disc with one white diamond indicating the minutes (9.5ct), and 143 multicolored sapphires set in the hour disc with one white diamond indicating the hours (8.18ct). In short, it’s stacked to the rafters with precious stones. Oh yeah, did we mention the 18k white gold bracelet set with 396 baguette diamonds (37.97ct) and 50 baguette multicolored sapphires (6.43ct)? Keeping all these gems safe are anti-reflective sapphire crystals on the front and back of the case. Remarkably, the Mystery Tourbillon Arlequino is water resistant up to 30 meters and has a 60-hour power reserve. As you can imagine, a watch this extravagant doesn’t come cheap, with the Mystery Tourbillon Arlequino retailing for $1.8 million USD. If you’ve got that sort of cash lying around then head to Jacob & Co to pick up this one-of-a-kind timepiece.
