Japanese watchmaker Grand Seiko celebrates its 140th year in business this week. To mark this remarkable milestone the brand is releasing a limited edition platinum Spring Drive timepiece. Only 50 of these intricate watches will be available at selected Grand Seiko boutiques across the world. Crafted by the elite team of watchmakers at the Micro Artist Studio in Grand Seiko’s manufacturing facility in Shiojiri, this elegant watch is inspired by the village Achi, located in the southern part of Japan’s Shinshu region. Achi is high up in the mountains and offers spectacular views of the night sky. Grand Seiko Grand Seiko Grand Seiko Grand Seiko Reflecting the night sky, the limited edition Spring Drive has a blue dial littered with “stars.” A unique manufacturing and finishing technique creates a striking dial that looks different from every angle. The manually wound 9R02 is housed in a platinum case with a diameter of 38.5 mm and a depth of 9.8 mm. The case itself features hand-engraved patterns while 14k white gold has been used for the hour and minute hands and hour markers, adding a touch of elegance to this already impressive Grand Seiko creation. The caliber also includes an 18k gold plaque engraved with the words “Micro Artist” on the lower bridge. If this doesn’t really float your boat, Grand Seiko offers buyers the chance to have something different engraved on the plaque. Maybe your partner’s name or a short motto? Whatever you decide, it’s a great way to impart a personal touch on the watch. The Spring Drive also has a blue crocodile strap and a dual-curved sapphire crystal covering. There are only 50 Grand Seiko Spring Drive Limited Edition SBGZ007 watches up for grabs exclusively through Grand Seiko boutiques from August, with a price tag of $79,000. grand-seiko.com
