Don’t expect a barrel of laughs when it comes to the latest movie from Joel Cohen of the Cohen brothers. Known for his work with brother Ethan on quirky films such as Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and No Country for Old Men, Joel has stepped out solo for the first time in his career for what looks like a dark and brooding take on William Shakespeare’s classic Macbeth. Joining him for the ride is the great Denzel Washington as the titular Macbeth and the always fabulous Francis McDormand has Lady Mcbeth.
An Apple TV+ and A24 collaboration, the black and white tale sure looks bleak. As you can see from the teaser trailer, this film is built on mood, with little dialogue and an emphasis on atmosphere and dread. There are brief shots of Washington’s Macbeth striding out of the fog, McDormand’s Lady Macbeth looking out a window, and Gleeson’s King Duncan surrounded by his most trusted advisors. I’m not really sure what to make of this. While I do love Denzel, I’m not sure I want to hear him try on an English accent. That said, the man doesn’t make bad films, so it will be interesting to see how he plays Macbeth. Also featuring in the film are Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton) as Macduff, Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit) as Lady Macduff, Sean Partick Thomas (Save the Last Dance) as Monteith, Ralph Ineson as The Captain (The Witch), and Harry Melling (The Queen’s Gambit) as Malcolm. The Tragedy of Macbeth will be released in theaters on December 25 and on Apple TV+ a few weeks later on January 14, 2022.
