Marking the 160th anniversary of Kintaro Hattori’s birth, the special edition Astron GPS Solar watch from Seiko pays tribute to the leadership of a man who would come to be known as the “King of watches in the East”. Decked out in piano blacks and regal golds, you might as well call the Astron timepiece the “king of watches” while you’re at it. Seiko is celebrating the life, career and achievements of its founder with the limited edition Astron GPS Solar watch, illustrating the perfection of Kintaro’s vision. Seeking always to be “one step ahead of the rest”, the world will never forget Kintaro for his opportunistic outlook in a time of massive social and industrial changes in Japan.
Born after the establishment of the Japanese ambassador to the United States in 1860, Kintaro grasped the importance of the era. Taking on timepiece repair as his occupation, Kintaro would grow his fledgling start-up into Japan’s pre-eminent timepiece manufacturer. One hundred sixty years later and the Astron once again demonstrates Seiko’s world-leading position with its GPS Solar technology. First developed in 2012, the world’s first GPS Solar watch uses the energy of the sun to connect to the GPS network. Adjusting your time zone at just the touch of a button, the Ultron provides atomic clock precision on your wrist no matter where you are on earth. Eight years on from its invention and the new Kintaro Hattori 160th Anniversary watch continues to exemplify Kintaro’s philosophy, keeping Seiko at the forefront of watchmaking technology for nearly two centuries.
Constructed from titanium with a scratch-resistant hard-coating, the watch case and bracelet compliments the Zirconia ceramic found in the case bezel. With sixteen facets for each decade since Kintaro’s birth, the deep black tones, gold-tone accents and high gloss of the bezel give this timepiece a commanding presence. Placed on your wrist, you too will befit its heritage. It’s also water-resistant to 200 meters and antimagnetic to 4,800 A/m. If you’re not a fan of titanium or metal straps in general, an alternative crocodile strap is also included in the box. Turning over the watch face will reveal Kintaro’s name and three reminders of his legacy. First is his trademark “S” occupying the centre of the case back. Above that reads his mantra of “one step ahead of the rest”. And finally, atop the rim sits the name Seiko, first used in 1924.
Packaged inside the special presentation box with a commemorative “S” mark badge, every exclusive owner will receive a card carrying a message from Kintaro’s great-grandson and the company’s current Chairman and CEO, Shinji Hattori. To be a part of such a special occasion, visit your nearest Seiko Boutique, or any selected retail partner around the world when it becomes available in October. But be quick, it’s limited to only 2,500 pieces. Kintaro Hattori. Businessman, visionary, watch industry pioneer and philanthropist—all upon your wrist. Find out more on seikowatches.com
