A mint-condition copy of the classic Nintendo game The Legend of Zelda sold for a record $870,000 at auction. The unopened game comes from an early limited production run of the NES game released in 1987. It’s believed to be one of just two NES TM copies that were then replaced by the common NES R variant a year later. Heritage Auction, who presided over the sale, called the sealed copy of Zelda “the apotheosis of rarity, cultural significance, and collection centerpieces. A proverbial trifecta of collector perfection that only one will receive the honor of calling their own.” The $870,000 sale price eclipsed the previous highest sale from early this year when a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. went for $660,000 in April. “I had a lot of confidence in this game, and, yet, I still feel like the reality of today’s bidding exceeded my vision of how it would play out,” Heritage Auctions Video Games Specialist Valarie McLeckie said. “Making history is never an easy thing. I’m just really proud we got to be part of this yet again.” First released in 1986, The Legend of Zelda has gone on to become one of the most iconic franchises from Nintendo. The game is so successful that the last installment, 2017s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is getting a sequel next year.
